I still haven’t met a person who doesn’t like to eat. Food is not only a physical necessity but it has become part of our social lives. some of us love to cook some not, some of us are vegetarian or even vegan and some are meat lovers. but we all fall that taste that we love and crave. if
If you are vegetarian or vegan then you are probably almost there. However, I personally know several vegetarian and vegans who don’t really know the whole thing about damaging food or healthy food. I am not vegetarian neither vegan. I don’t think I will be able to live without my meats forever. even that because of my religion I do quit eating any type of meat several times a year and once a year all types of live protein. IT IS HARD.
So again this is not about you becoming vegan or starting some diet. this is about making healthier choices. I am not a doctor, so I will just try to share with you, my eating style and habits.
And Now let me introduce you to your first step: PORTION
Maybe you’ve seen it before or somebody told you this already, and in this case, I will reconfirm it.
S I Z E M A T T E R S!
We only need a certain amount of calories to live for the day. everybody is different on those needs. If you have a sedentary job and don’t move much then you don’t need much if you are a small person you also don’t need much. it is as easy as a car and a fuel. A big car needs more fuel and a smaller car needs less and if you don’t drive the car it is fine without refueling that often.
“But I am hungry!” will you say.
Well, it is not you, it is your stomach.
The stomach is very stretchable. so you will always be able to put something extra in it. and it will stretch, but the bad thing about it is that it stretches fast but doesn’t go back that quickly. So if yesterday you went to that awesome BBQ and ate more than usual and got some dessert later and then you felt so stuffed and happy (yes, food makes us happy), then today when you have your usual portion at lunch, there is a probability that you still will want more. it is because your stomach is stretched from yesterday and there is still space. And here is the interesting point:
Many dietitian and digest indicate that you should drink a glass of water before in taking food. The reason for that is directly related to what I was saying. you take your water to fill the stomach, of course, your food portion will be smaller. BUT! I honestly think this is the worst you can do.
Your mission to is to get your stomach to the same size as it was before you went to that amazing BBQ, so drinking water to fill it will not solve but possibly worsen the problem.
“But I am hungry!” will you say well the solution is not hard. Have a fruit couple of hours after the food. Even 1,5-hour time frame is already good. Have an apple, have a banana, or even have a yogurt (I will go back to it in future posts). remember that famous “eat small portions many times a day” it is basically it.
Of course, you heard about gastro by-pass, that surgery when they cut part of your stomach… YES!! THEY MAKE IT SMALLER.
Do you know what happens after that surgery and how people lose weight? Well, they don’t eat much. They get filled with a tiny portion. and this is what I am encouraging you to do.
So my advice for today is: Start cutting your portions. do it slowly day by day or do it at once, it is up to you. But by the day 20, you should be already consuming half of what is your portion now.
- Get a smaller plate, it will look like it is full instead of looking to a bigger plate with less food.
- Serve your plate in the kitchen, put what you are planning to eat and don’t refill it.
- If you overate one day, be especially careful next day, eat some fruit to help you through the day. Some fruits fill faster than others.
- Cut your portion a little bit every day
- Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day but don’t fill your stomach too much.
Such a great post! Today it’s the 1st of September and I had planned to start eating healthier on this day (you know, first of the month…) so this really comes in handy! Thanks for the tips 🙂
Thank you so much for your comment! I hope my little tips will help you in your journey.
